The red cap is probably the best cap Mario can get, since it lets him fly. To get this cap, Mario must first have found 10 stars. Once that's done, go back to the main hall, where an intense light streams down to the center of the room. Stop there and press C-Up to look at where the light is coming from. Looking at it head-on, Mario will be transported to the red cap mini-level. When flying, Mario is steered like when swimming: press down to climb. Head straight ahead to get the first coins (there are 2 between each tower).

Turn left to spot 2 red coins in the distance, turn left again to spot the next 2, and do the same for the last 2.

A star appears. Go grab it, then jump on the big red switch. As in Super Mario World, all the red "dotted" blocks will "fill in", and you'll be able to get a red cap from every red block you come across. To fly with this winged cap, you either need to do a triple jump or (even better) use a cannon to launch yourself.
